“The hotel will consist of 33 keys, restaurant, retail, ballroom, back of house spaces, and a new addition,” read the building permit application filed on January 27, 2022. According to the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau, the currently-shuttered Grand Karem Shrine Building at 701 Washington Avenue in Downtown Waco will undergo an extensive remodel and open for business as Hotel 1928 in 2023. The hotel, owned by Magnolia’s Chip and Joanna Gaines, will feature an 8,000 square foot restaurant, a 6,200 square foot meeting area, and a 3,550 square foot rooftop terrace. The hotel’s “1928” name stems from the year the structure was completed.
