A recently digitized engraved currency certificate issued by “The City of Waco, State of Texas” in 1875 provides a glimpse into the financial practices of the time. Measuring 9 x 19 cm, the certificate features black-and-white images on the front and reads: “Will pay to bearer One Dollar.” Signed by the recorder, James H. Torbett, and the mayor, John C. West, the certificate also includes the text “Receivable for all Advalorem Tax. Due the City of Waco” on the back, alongside a decorative blue ink design. The certificate’s digitization and preservation ensures that it will be accessible for study and research by collectors and historians alike.
