Exploring Waco History: First H-E-B Opened in 1949

This old photo from the mid-1950s showcases Waco’s first H-E-B store, which opened its doors in 1949. The store is a part of the long and storied history of H-E-B, a grocery chain founded in 1905 by Florence Butt in Kerrville, Texas. Over the years, the company has grown to become one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, with multiple locations throughout Texas. Despite its growth, H-E-B has remained committed to philanthropic giving and charitable activities across the state. The building and its distinctive art deco tower that once held the H-E-B sign still stand at 1718 Austin Avenue in Downtown Waco.
