The commanding general of the III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, Lt. Gen. Sean C. Bernabe, hosted a press conference on March 17 to provide an update on the death of Pvt. Ana Basalduaruiz. The 20-year-old combat engineer from the 1st Cavalry Division was found deceased on March 13, and the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation into her death.
Bernabe expressed his condolences to Basalduaruiz’s family, stating that “this entire community mourns her loss.” He also confirmed that Fort Hood is in constant contact with Basalduaruiz’s parents and that a team from Fort Hood is currently with her father in California.
While there are no indications of foul play at this point in the investigation, CID has not ruled anything out, and the circumstances leading up to Basalduaruiz’s death will be investigated fully and completely, according to Bernabe. The complete CID statement can be found at the end of the press conference video.
